I had the misfortune of making a transaction at the Fastbank Davtashen branch. Honestly, it felt as if the branch had never moved beyond the level of a pawnshop. To my surprise, no one in the entire branch seemed to know how to process an international SWIFT transfer. I had to guide the employees through the procedure myself, and it still took 1.5 hours just to initiate the transfer. Unfortunately, that was only the beginning. The following day, the money was still on my account. After several calls to the call centre, the funds were finally debited, so I assumed the issue had been resolved. Four days later, the beneficiary still had not received the money. I contacted the bank again to find out what had happened. Only then was I informed that the transfer had been suspended because proof of the source of funds was required. No one from the bank had contacted me to let me know. Had I not called myself, I would still have been waiting without any information. After several attempts to reach the Davtashen branch by phone, one of the employees explained that there had been a problem with my transfer because the employee responsible for it had gone on vacation, and no one else knew the status of the transaction. I was told that I needed to provide proof of the source of funds. When I complained about the unacceptable delay, the employee simply hung up on me. I called the branch again and explained that the money originated from a loan issued by Fastbank itself. I politely asked them to retrieve the loan agreement from their own system and provide it to the relevant department. Do you know what I was told after a long discussion? "I'm not going to look in our system. You have to bring the document yourself. My working hours are over. Bye." I was genuinely shocked. It felt less like speaking to a bank employee and more like dealing with someone being rude on the street. Fastbank, please invest in training your staff and improving your internal processes. This is the 21st century. Customers expect professionalism, communication, and accountability. A bank should operate like a modern financial institution—not like a corner vegetable shop.

On AFM, you can view the list of banks in Armenia, open the page of a specific bank, find its contact details, phone numbers, branch and ATM addresses, and learn about its services and financial products. AFM also allows you to compare products offered by Armenian banks according to the conditions that matter to you.
Choosing a bank depends on what you plan to use it for. If you need a bank for everyday payments, transfers and a bank card, compare account and card maintenance fees, cash withdrawal and transfer fees, mobile and online banking, and the availability of branches and ATMs.
For a specific financial product, compare the product itself rather than choosing a bank only by its name. For deposits, important parameters include the interest rate, currency, term, possibility of adding funds and early withdrawal conditions. For loans and mortgages, compare the effective interest rate, fees, monthly payment and repayment terms. For bank cards, look at maintenance costs, withdrawal and transfer fees and additional benefits.
There is no single best bank in Armenia for every customer. One bank may offer more suitable deposit conditions, while another may be more convenient for cards, loans, online banking or international transfers. AFM helps you compare banks in Armenia and their banking products across different parameters and find offers that match your needs.
Banks in Armenia offer individuals a wide range of services for everyday financial needs. Customers can open bank accounts, get debit and credit cards, make payments and transfers, exchange currencies, place money in deposits and apply for different types of loans.
The main services for individuals include:
- current and settlement accounts;
- debit and credit cards;
- deposits and savings products;
- consumer loans;
- mortgages and secured loans;
- domestic and international money transfers;
- currency exchange;
- mobile and online banking;
- payment services;
- investment and brokerage services.
When choosing a banking product, it is better to compare all important conditions rather than focus on a single rate or fee.
When choosing a bank card, check not only the annual maintenance fee but also cash withdrawal and transfer fees, limits and any additional benefits.
When comparing loans, look at the effective interest rate rather than only the nominal rate, as it gives a more complete picture of the cost of borrowing. It is also worth comparing fees, repayment terms and early repayment conditions.
For deposits, the highest advertised interest rate does not always mean the most suitable offer. The currency, term, minimum amount, possibility of adding funds, interest payment schedule and early withdrawal conditions all affect the final return.
Armenian banks also provide services for companies, individual entrepreneurs and other business customers.
The main banking services for legal entities include:
- opening and maintaining business accounts,
- domestic and international transfers,
- foreign currency transactions,
- corporate bank cards,
- payroll services,
- POS terminals,
- online payment acceptance,
- business loans and credit lines,
- overdrafts,
- bank guarantees,
- letters of credit and other trade finance services,
- online and mobile banking for businesses.
For a company, the choice of bank affects everyday financial operations. Account maintenance costs, transfer fees, foreign exchange conditions, the functionality of online banking and the speed of processing transactions are more important than the popularity of the bank itself.
For businesses working with customers or suppliers outside Armenia, international banking services are particularly important. Before opening an account, it is useful to check which currencies the bank works with, what types of international transfers it supports and what fees and documentation requirements apply.
Companies need to also compare business financing. Armenian banks offer different types of loans and credit lines, and their conditions differ depending on the amount, term, collateral, financial position of the company and purpose of financing.
The official websites of banks contain current tariffs and detailed conditions. However, when several banks and financial products need to be compared, AFM makes it easier to review available options in one place.
Banks in Armenia are licensed, regulated and supervised by the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia, or CBA.
The Central Bank establishes requirements for the operation of banks and supervises compliance with financial regulations. These requirements cover areas such as capital, liquidity, risk management, corporate governance and protection of customers of financial institutions.
Banks in Armenia must have the appropriate licence issued by the Central Bank. Customers can check the official CBA register to confirm whether an organisation is authorised to operate as a bank in Armenia.
The Central Bank also publishes financial information about the banking system. Indicators such as bank assets, capital and other financial data may help users better understand the size and position of individual banks.
Deposits of individuals, including individual entrepreneurs, held in banks operating in Armenia are covered by Armenia's deposit guarantee system.
The guarantee is provided by the Deposit Guarantee Fund. A customer does not need to register separately or pay an additional fee for the guarantee: eligible deposits are covered automatically.
The maximum guarantee is:
- up to AMD 16 million for deposits held only in Armenian drams;
- up to AMD 7 million for deposits held only in foreign currency.
If a customer keeps deposits in several Armenian banks, the guarantee limit applies separately to each bank. Different calculation rules apply when both AMD and foreign-currency deposits are held in the same bank.
Deposit protection should not be understood as a guarantee of every financial product offered by a bank. It applies to eligible deposits under the rules of the deposit guarantee system and does not mean that loans, securities, investment products or other banking services are guaranteed in the same way.
